Following disputes during the meeting, TRM’s Supervisory Board took note of Vlad Țurcanu’s resignation

The Supervisory Board (SB) of the public broadcaster Teleradio-Moldova (TRM) took note of the request for resignation from the post of Director-General of the company, submitted by Vlad Țurcanu. The decision was adopted with six votes ‘in favour’ and one ‘against’ during the meeting on Friday, 22 May. The meeting of the body responsible for appointing TRM’s management was marked by debates and disputes regarding the interpretation of the legal procedure applicable to the general manager’s resignation and the point at which it can be formalised.

Present at the meeting, Vlad Țurcanu announced that he did not intend to withdraw his resignation. At the same time, he stated that “the decision has been made” and that he “stands by it”.

The outgoing Director-General of TRM stated that he would serve in an interim capacity until another person is appointed. He said he would not stand for a new term and called on the Supervisory Board to organise the competition to appoint the future Director-General without delay.

Some members of the Supervisory Board expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation regarding Eurovision and regarded Vlad Țurcanu’s decision to resign as too drastic, arguing that the circumstances leading to this situation needed to be clarified. Other members of the Board, however, emphasised the need to comply with legal provisions, noting that, as long as a resignation has been submitted, it must be considered.

“What is happening now is tragic. We need to discuss why we have reached this situation. I, too, am outraged by the jury’s scores, but that does not mean it had to come to the point where the Director-General had to resign. ‘What do you mean, are we going to decapitate national television and radio just because someone on the jury didn’t award the correct mark?’ emphasised CS member Aureliu Dănilă, suggesting that Vlad Țurcanu withdraw his request.

In the same context, his colleague, Maria Șleahtițchi, stated that responsibility for the vote lies with the jury and not with the institution’s management. “I respect Mr Țurcanu’s point of view. If he has submitted the request, we must examine it,” she said.

On the other hand, Corneliu Popovici insisted on the need to comply with legal regulations. “A request has been submitted, which we must examine. The person concerned might, for example, not even have been present today. This is a request submitted and signed not by a child, but by a mature adult holding a position of responsibility,” he said.

After nearly two hours of heated debate, TRM’s Supervisory Board decided to take note of the resignation request submitted by Vlad Țurcanu, but to postpone the formal acceptance of his resignation. The Board is due to meet again on 27 May, when it will decide whether to declare the post vacant and whether to announce a competition to appoint a new director-general. Under the Labour Code, Vlad Țurcanu has a seven-day period during which he may withdraw his resignation.

During the meeting, Țurcanu stated that it would be appropriate for the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Arcadie Gherasim, to also take part in the discussions.

When previously contacted by Media Azi for comment on the situation, Arcadie Gherasim said he could not provide any details as he was on holiday.

The Director-General of Teleradio-Moldova, Vlad Țurcanu, announced his resignation on Monday 18 May during a press briefing, after the Moldovan jury at the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest awarded Romania’s entry just three points, whilst Ukraine received no points at all.

“My resignation is a sign that the fraternal ties the Republic of Moldova shares with Romania, as well as our gratitude towards Ukraine for its daily sacrifices, remain unchanged. Our attitude towards Ukraine is not one of zero points, and our feelings towards Romania can only be ones of love,” he said at the time.
